Can You Take a Rental Car from Georgia to Armenia?
18.10.2026
How to drive a rental car to Armenia: the rental company's permission, documents, insurance and what to expect at the border.
Yes — but only with the rental company's consent and documents arranged in advance. You cannot simply drive a rental car across the border: border officers will ask for the owner's permission.
What to arrange in advance
- Tell the rental company at least 2–3 days before the trip. We arrange the cross-border paperwork on request.
- You receive a power of attorney / permission from the car's owner and the vehicle documents — without them the car will not be let through.
- Check your own documents: passport and licence (with Latin letters, or with an International Driving Permit).
At the border
- The main crossing for a trip from Tbilisi is Sadakhlo (Bagratashen on the Armenian side). There are other crossings too, such as Guguti and Ninotsminda.
- When entering Armenia by car you buy Armenian insurance and pay temporary vehicle import fees on the spot — keep some cash.
- Expect queues in summer and on holidays.
Insurance and restrictions
The rental company's Georgian insurance covers Georgia; in Armenia the Armenian insurance bought at the border applies. Discuss damage and excess terms abroad when the permission is arranged. The rental agreement rules (zero alcohol, no off-road driving) apply there too.
A convenient route
Tbilisi — Sadakhlo — Lake Sevan — Yerevan — back via Dilijan: 2–4 days. Pick up the car in Tbilisi with airport delivery — car rental in Tbilisi.
