Best Time for a Road Trip in Georgia: Seasons, Weather and Mountain Roads
You can drive around Georgia at any time of year, but the season strongly shapes your route and choice of car.
Spring (April — May)
Everything is in bloom, there are few tourists, and the weather is pleasant for cities, Kakheti and the Imereti canyons. Snow still lies in the high mountains: some roads (for example to Ushguli) can be difficult until late spring. Rental prices are below summer rates.
Summer (June — August)
Beach season in Batumi and Adjara and the best time for the mountains: Svaneti, Kazbegi, Racha. Tbilisi and Kutaisi are hot, there are many tourists and rentals cost more — book early, especially 7-seaters and AWD cars.
Autumn (September — October)
Many say this is the best time: a warm sea in September, golden forests in the mountains and the grape harvest (rtveli) in Kakheti. Roads are still open, there are fewer tourists and prices drop. More about the wine region in Kakheti by car.
Winter (December — March)
Ski season in Gudauri, Bakuriani, Goderdzi and Svaneti. Passes close during snowfall, so you need AWD and chains. The coast is quiet, and rentals are the cheapest of the year. Tips in winter car rental in Georgia.
Choosing a car by season
- Summer, the coast and cities — an economical sedan.
- Mountains in summer — a crossover with good clearance; Ushguli only in AWD with 180 mm+.
- Winter — an AWD crossover and chains.
- Families or groups — a 7-seater.
The longer the rental, the cheaper each day — from $35/day for rentals of 2+ weeks. Available cars for your dates are on the booking page.
