4×4 and SUV rental in Georgia: Svaneti, Kazbegi, mountain Adjara
Half of Georgia's most beautiful places lie beyond the asphalt. Ushguli, the road up to Gergeti, the upper villages of Adjara — they need all-wheel drive and clearance. Here's where 4×4 is a must and where a regular car is fine.
Where you need AWD
- Svaneti: Mestia – Ushguli. Asphalt to Mestia, then 45 km of gravel along the cliffs. Our "Mestia and the towers of Ushguli" route — 340 km, 2–3 days, AWD/4×4 with at least 180 mm of ground clearance only — that is written into the rental agreement.
- Kazbegi: Gergeti church. The road up is concreted but steep — AWD makes life much easier, especially in rain.
- Racha: Shovi and Utsera — gravel and fords; after rain don't go without AWD.
- Mountain Adjara beyond Khulo — gravel, fords after rain.
Where you DON'T need 4×4
Batumi–Tbilisi, Kakheti, Borjomi, the Imereti canyons, Vardzia — all asphalt, any car from the fleet works. Don't overpay for an SUV on classic routes.
What we offer
AWD crossovers — Mitsubishi Outlander, Kia Sorento, Hyundai Tucson, Subaru Forester and Outback. Every rental includes insurance, unlimited mileage and roadside assistance across Georgia — in the mountains that's not a formality. Full zero-excess coverage is $20/day: gravel throws stones, it buys peace of mind.
Mountain rules
South Ossetia and Abkhazia — prohibited (insurance void there). The rental agreement also closes the Truso, Juta, Vashlovani, Tusheti, Omalo and Shatili directions: there is no insurance cover there, and the fine is 500–1000 GEL plus the cost of any damage. The Mestia — Ushguli — Lentekhi road is allowed only in an AWD/4×4 with at least 180 mm of ground clearance. Armenia and Azerbaijan — possible on request, we arrange the paperwork. Mileage is unlimited: the whole Caucasus in one holiday if you like.
